Successful expert forum on sewage sludge utilisation
After a sewage sludge day with the slogan “Sewage sludge, quo vadis?” had been organised already for last IFAT 2018 and the feedback to that event exceeded expectations by far, we wanted to inform about the current developments in the sewage sludge market also in 2019.
The legal framework in Germany is making it increasingly difficult to use sewage sludge in agriculture, but the urgently required thermal capacities have by no means been created yet. The topic of phosphorus recycling, which may still be considered by many to be a thing of the distant future, is already in the focus of plant manufacturers.
The expert forum was opened by CSO Rainer Köhler of HUBER SE and further moderated by Professor Dichtl of the Technical University of Braunschweig. The comprehensive program informed in the legal part the professional audience, which consisted of more than 130 experts of the sewage sludge scene, about the effects of the amended sewage sludge law, the current legal framework conditions for sewage sludge disposal and the possibilities of cooperations.
In the technical part of the program, it was reported about sewage sludge drying, the possibilities of sewage sludge utilisation and experiences made with previous projects. In the next part of the event program, the participants discussed innovations in flue gas cleaning following the mono-incineration of sewage sludge in accordance with the new BREF regulation and the possibilities for phosphorus recycling using the pontes pabuli method for fertilizer production. At the end, the company Emter from Altenstadt and Städtischen Werke Energie + Wärme GmbH Kassel shared exemplarily their experiences of sewage sludge recyclers with the professional audience. It was also explained why the innovative HUBER belt drying technology was chosen in both cases.
