A gourmet meat processing plant upgrading their onsite effluent treatment plant - a Dissolved Air Flotation Plant case study

When an existing customer was looking to upgrade their on-site effluent treatment plant, HUBER Technology were contacted to help. The site now benefits from both the robust HUBER Micro Strainer ROTAMAT® Ro9 inlet screen and HUBER Dissolved Air Flotation Plant HDF 1 for fine solids and associated COD removal.

Background

A gourmet meat processing plant was expanding and bringing online new products. This increased the volume of wastewater to be discharged to sewer as well as making it dirtier than permitted under the site’s existing consent limits. Having previously installed a tank-mounted HUBER ROTAMAT® Ro9 screen to remove larger solids and protect downstream pumps and pipework, the client was familiar with HUBER and the high quality of equipment supplied.

To comply with the discharge consent conditions, the new higher loaded wastewater would need further treatment before discharge to sewer. The new wastewater had high concentrations of both TSS and COD, as well as having high chloride concentrations because of the processes used within the factory.

As one of the largest stainless steel users in Europe, HUBER were well placed to provide a high specification unit capable of dealing with the wastewater.

The new DAF installation with HUBER Dissolved Air Flotation Plant HDF includes coagulation with PAC, pH correction with caustic and flocculation with a dilute polymer made up automatically by the batching system.

The chemicals are injected and mixed in a pipe flocculator, which prepares the wastewater for separation before entering the DAF unit. Dosing is fully automated and contained within the pipe flocculator, so there are no odours normally associated with open tanks at treatment works. The DAF is also fully enclosed with covers over the top of the machine and optional odour extraction point.

Separated solids are floated to the top of the machine and removed by an automated mechanical scraper system, which moves the sludge into a sludge hopper for forward pumping to the site’s sludge storage tank.

HUBER provided the full equipment scope to site, including:

  • HUBER Dissolved Air Flotation Plant HDF 1 unit in stainless steel grade 316
  • Automated polymer batching plant to flocculate the wastewater
  • Automated pH correction and coagulant dosing
  • Feed, sludge and chemical dosing pumps
  • Pipe flocculator to mix wastewater and chemicals within an enclosed, small footprint
  • Pre-programmed control panel to automate operation of the plant

As a result of the installation, the client is able to continue discharging their wastewater to sewer and did not have to resort to the very costly alternative of having the entire flow removed in road tankers. As well as saving money and further reducing its environmental impact, the installation is of a suitably high standard for site to show potential retailers the installation during tours, as a demonstration of their environmental commitments.
